The Mother Rock
JH (Stompie) Meyer is known for his more ‘natural’ winemaking style, and this year’s Mother Rock releases are certainly along those lines – here are Christian Eedes’ tasting notes:
Mother Rock White 2020: 41% Chenin Blanc, 25% Viognier, 19% Grenache Blanc and 15% Semillon. 15% fermented on the skins for four weeks and also includes an element aged under flor. The nose is expressive if unusual with nutty, waxy overtones as well as citrus and stone fruit, herbs and flowers. The palate is lean, fresh and super-tasty, the finish long and dry. It’s a wine that manages to be simultaneously challenging and invigorating. As ever, it’s sure to be divisive – I, for one, like it. CE’s rating: 95/100.
Mother Rock Holocene 2020: 50% Carignan, 25% Mourvèdre, 20% Cinsault and 5% Grenache. 100% whole-bunch fermented. Matured for 11 months in old oak. Red and black berries, fynbos, floral perfume, spice and slightly wild, raw meat quality on the nose while the palate is tightly wound with pure fruit, vibrant acidity and nicely grippy tannins, the finish super-savoury. An edgy wine in every sense. CE’s rating: 95/100.
Dorrance ‘kama’ Chenin Blanc
Saturday | Sunday Weekend tasting: Frenchman Christoff Durand has been in South Africa since 1995 and makes his wine in an urban wine cellar and tasting room, located in Cape Town’s Heritage Square. The ‘kama’ Chenin Blanc uses bush-vine fruit from the Swartland and Franschhoek, fermented and aged in concrete eggs to give a rich, balanced mouthfeel with flavours of baked apple, honey and lemony zest. Join us this weekend to taste the Dorrance ‘kama’ Chenin Blanc!
Parking in High Street
The pedestrianised High Street looks beautiful but we have lost quite a few parking spaces along High Street. Most of our customers don’t take to too long selecting their favourites so my advice is to stop directly in front of our shop while you are with us – this will save you time driving around looking for a parking space.
|COVID-19 RULES: |

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC’s, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support – stay safe – see you soon!
