Pilgrim’s Bastardo and Origami…

In stock: 2020 Pilgrim Bastardo do Castello

This exciting Jura cultivar’s roots run deep into the decomposed red/brown granitic soils of Stellenbosch and it is only the second harvest as the first certified and bottled Bastardo do Castello (also known as Trousseau Noir) in South Africa. Perched on top of a North Eastern sloping hill, nestled between other isolated patches of hard to find vines, these vines enjoy prime views over Stellenbosch and its rolling hills toward Cape Town. Manicured, and especially nurtured and kept isolated so as to keep safe from encroaching leaf roll virus off of neighboring farmlands, these vines produce amazing fruit. On the slopes of Stellenbosch Mountain – a landmark that epitomizes quality. Only 66 vines have been found in Stellenbosch – and in this bottle is the wine that flows from them!

Tasting notes by winemaker Henry Kotze:
Bright ruby red. Translucent and not very deep, but sparklingly inviting.
Nose: Starts off quite subdued at first, with whiffs of lavender and fresh tilled earth, but opens up to sweet raspberry and sour cherry, baked rhubarb and chamomile. Again there is a mysterious element of a new variety, which I can’t always pinpoint, but is very familiar, almost like a memory that doesn’t quite want you to grasp it.
Palate: Hints of bramble berry, raspberry strawberry, sweetly sublime with red cherry tartness. Weight is finely attuned to the lighter structure, very well in sync with what the lighter grip can offer. Mouth filling it surely is, with lots to offer and very appealing.

We managed to get the last few bottles last week and they’re going fast!

Lieben ‘Origami’ Pinot Noir
Saturday | Sunday Weekend tasting: Winemaker Alwyn Liebenberg is not telling us a helluva lot about his new ‘Origami’ Pinot Noir, except that it ‘unfolds an upfront nose of berries and ripe plums with subtle floral notes. Between the folds of red and black fruit, hints of cloves appear on the palate and leaves an earthy aftertaste of roasted spices laced with strawberry.’ Join us this weekend to taste this new release from Alwyn, and see if we agree with him…..

  About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC’s, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.

Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support – stay safe – see you soon!
