Now in stock: Longavi Sauvignon Gris…
One of the nicest people you could meet, CWG Member David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg never seems to sit still and consistently produces some of the best wine in South Africa. The Longavi Sauvignon Gris is one of his lesser-known releases, and here is his Tasting Note:

— The SAUVIGNON GRIS 2022 —-
Julio Bouchon’s great-grandfather planted Sauvignon Gris on his Angostura farm inColchagua Valley, Chile, in 1912. A century later, David Nieuwoudt, together withhis friend Julio, became the first to grow this variety in South Africa in the Cederbergmountains, creating the country’s first Sauvignon Gris.

— WINEMAKING —-
Grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning at 23.5°B. The grapes are thenwholebunch pressed followed by one day of settling and then transferred into in 400lFrench oak barrels. Natural fermentation takes place over the next 40 to 60 day at13°C. Once fermentation is completed, the barrels are matured for up to five monthswith a monthly bâtonnage of the lees. No malolactic fermentation takes place. 4th filltight-grain barrels with a medium toast are used for the Sauvignon Gris. Only twobarrels of this wine are produced and minimal fining and filtration are used.

— TASTING NOTES BY SANDY HARPER CWM —
Sauvignon Gris is a shyer version of Sauvignon Blanc. Not as forthcoming on thenose, but charming in its appeal and broad palate due to the softer acids and slightlyraised perceived residual sugar. The pale, translucent colour creates luminosity in theglass and the wine does not need to be too chilled to reveal its personality. Initiallyshy on the nose but opening up in the glass with summer fruit flavours of pineapple, pear and ripe red apple. This wine delivers versatile, easy summer sipping by the glasswith the slightly sweeter, ripe nuances creating a fleshier mouthfeel.Optimum Drinking Time: Three to five years.

— FOOD PAIRING —
Due to the slightly higher residual sugar and lower acidity, Sauvignon Gris makes foran interesting food partner. Try it with antipasti favourites including kalamata olives, marinated artichokes and roasted peppers. Or simply enjoy it by the glass. Pair it withany tomato-based dishes such as caprese salad with basil pesto. It can even handlesome spicier dishes such as penne arrabbiata and pizza with black olives andanchovies. Savour it with summer favourites like smoked chicken salad or step it up topair with coronation chicken for a special lunch.

Saturday | Sunday Weekend tasting:
This weekend we will be tasting the Vigne d’Or Red Blend which was made by Adam Mason of Terre Paisible in Franschhoek. They tell us that it has a “Dark, brooding appearance. Opulent aromas of dried cherries, tobacco, cocoa bean and cured leather. A rich, ripely styled wine. The palate is packed with fine grained tannins providing generous mouthfeel and a long lasting, flavourful finish. A blend of: Cabernet Sauvignon 51%, Shiraz 26%, Merlot 18%, Petit Verdot 3%, Cabernet Franc 2%. Each of the traditional Bordeaux varietals in this complex wine underwent fermentation in large oak fermenters. After malolactic fermentation the separate components were further matured in Taransaud barrels for an additional 8 months before being blended. The Shiraz – vinified separately in new French oak for 10 months gives intensity and structure to the blend, adding dimension and intrigue.”

Why not stop in over the weekend to try the Vigne d’Or Red Blend!Vigne d'Or Red Blend - Tasting at Wine & Co, Hermanus.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC’s, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.

Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
