Naude, and Villiera…

In stock: Naude ‘Langpad’ Colombard and ‘Oupa Willem’ Cinsault/Cab Sauv

Ian Naude is very well known in the South African wine industry, and we are happy to have two of his wines on our shelves.

In his own words, he says, “Naudé Wines is the culmination of a journey that began more than 30 years ago. Since that first harvest, I’ve worked all over the world, hoping to craft wines that tell a story of time and place. I love the diversity we have in South Africa. Not just of the people, but the soils, the microclimates, and the wine varietals that thrive under their own unique conditions. I’m fortunate to have been introduced to a few of these vineyards, and work with some of the wonderful grapes that they produce, many of these from certified old vines. The grapes on these vines are storied, complex and unique. Each year they represent something different – whatever nature allows them – and with any luck, I don’t get in the way.”

Old Vines Colombard ‘LANGPAD’ 2020.
Our Old Vines Colombard was grown on a 35 year old vine in the Vredendal-area, on the West Coast of South Africa.
The farm lays about 35km from the ocean, resulting in an amazing Kelpy seaspray finish. We were amazed at how classic this cultivar can present itself, beginning with a gorgeous white peach and passion fruit on the nose, followed by pears and peaches and finishing with that saline salty freshness. The resulting wine is beautifully balanced and precise. True to its origins, it is understated and classical with a fine linear textural focus, however the palate is focused and bright, bristling with excitement owing to the prominent acidity. The long, saline finish will keep you coming back for more, but we recommend that you try and keep a few bottles back for ageing.

Old Vines ‘OUPA WILLEM’ 2018.
I never had the opportunity to meet Oupa Willem, but I’ve been told so many wonderful stories about him. One of my fondest was hearing that his horse and dog always came first, and the rest of the world, second. No question, he was my grandfather. For a long time I have wanted to make a Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon blend. I have tasted and enjoyed many of these blends that date back to the 60’s / 70’s. They are still aging gracefully, drinking beautifully, and I believe we are losing out on our heritage by not sticking to these classics. In naming this Cape Heritage Blend, I kept going back to Oupa Willem. I believe his spirit and his stories are inherent in this wine, and I hope he would be proud to know that.

 Tasting: Villiera

“For over 30 years the Griers of Villiera have been unlocking the marvels of nature to create the distinctive wines and sparkling wines that bear the family name”

Saturday | Sunday Weekend tasting: Cousins Jeff and Simon Grier started the family-owned Villiera Wines outside Stellenbosch in 1983 and embarked on an extensive replanting of classic and local varietals. Cathy Brewer (née Grier) later joined the family team to head up the sales, marketing and export divisions. The introduction of hi-tech cellar facilities for the production of still wines as well as Méthode Cap Classique combined with a unique wine business philosophy has seen Villiera developing into one of the largest private wineries in the country.

We will be tasting these two white wines from Villiera this weekend so do stop in and join us:

Villiera Chenin Blanc tasting notes: The wine has abundant fruit with a hint of wood spice on the nose, including pineapple, guava and citrus. On the palate it is rich with a hint of freshness. It is well balanced with a long finish. The wine has the structure to last for 5 years, but Chenin Blanc can also be enjoyed young.
Blend: 100% Chenin Blanc. The fruit comes from 3 blocks including 40% old bush vines.

Villiera Jasmine tasting notes: A floral, slightly spicy white wine which is fresh, light and slightly sweet but complex enough to drink with food (fusion and spicier dishes). Created to satisfy market demand for a lighter, slightly sweet, floral blend. The evocative name reflects the essence of the wine.
Blend: 30% Moscat Ottonel, 33% Gewurztraminer, 37% Riesling.

 About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC’s, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.

Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.

Thank you for your support – stay safe – see you soon!
