| The Thistle & Weed wines are produced by Etienne Terblanche (Viticulturist) and Stephanie Wiid (Winemaker) who say they are ‘Wines Made By Going Off-The-Beaten-Path’. A few weeks ago I visited Stephanie at their new cellar in Jonkershoek to taste through the range, and here are her Tasting Notes: Brandnetel Chenin Blanc: Delicate notes of quince, white peach and blood orange, the palate pulls through with quintessential Chenin blanc star power, including a rich and more-ish palate and lemon-zip acidity. Springdoring Chenin Blanc: Brimming with notes of grapefruit and the trademark Swartland thatch. Edgy aromatics, limes and more citrus on the pristine palate resulting in a crystalline and mineral finish. Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc: A uniquely Paarl expression that is wonderfully layered with a broader mid-palate, Duwweltjie bursts with peach and citrus aromatics typical of a Chenin blanc. Delicious when paired with seafood, sunshine and generally good times (although it may help in the bad times too). Khakibos White: As a voluptuous Cape Blend that brings forward a medley of explosive aromatics, the varietal composition lead by Verdelho differs year on year depending on the best performing vineyards we come across in our explorations be it Palomino, Chenin Blanc, Fernão Pires or all of the above. Knapsekerel Cab Franc: It doesn’t matter if you can’t pronounce it, all that matters is that you enjoy it! Our Knapsekêrel Cabernet franc flies the flag of this special variety high, showing off classic varieties of dried thyme, violet and blackberries. If you’re looking for a wine to gift or age for a bit, this one is an excellent choice, dis knaps! Nastergal Red: For this deliciously dark blend of Tempranillo, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Souzão and Touriga Francesa grapes are blended to ensure plenty of enticing aromas such as mulberries and intense spices are preserved. A big wine ideal for big moments. P. Jackson: The intense concentration comes from a blend of Touriga Franca, Souzao and Tinta Barocca grapes that were fortified after accumulating high sugar levels in the berries during ripening. Four years of barrel ageing allowed flavours of ripe red and black berries to develop alongside a velvet-cloaked palate with hints of sweet spice. Hand-corked, waxed and labelled, only 1,200 bottles were produced of this limited release. |
| Weekend tasting: Brookedale’s Kiara Scott has created a wonderful Syrah which over-delivers and “seduces the senses and tempts the palate from the moment it enters your space. The nose offers an alluring perfume that draws you into the glass. Old-world charm holds your attention on the palate where sultry tannins, spicy earth elements, impressive length and bright acidity await. The epitome of old-world elegance meets new world bravery.” You can join us to taste the Mason Road Syrah this weekend! |

Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in independent specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus. In addition to the great selection of well-known local wines and MCC’s, we also stock craft gin and beer, imported wines, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker. Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping. Shop Online! Please note that our website does not show the complete range of wine that we have in stock, so please do contact us if you are looking for something not listed online, especially those that are ‘allocation’ only. We offer free delivery in and around Hermanus, and free shipping to major centres around South Africa for orders over R1600. Please contact us for international shipping rates.
