Savage Thief in the Night

2023 marks the 11th release from Savage Wines.

A release focussed on the 2022 vintage with one 2021 in the form of Savage Red. We continue to operate from our city home in Salt River  developing and farming parcels of vines in various locations around the Western Cape. 2022 was a particularly challenging vintage. We had a lot of heat early in the season which  shut the vines down for a while resulting in a slower start to the harvest. Fortunately for us, all the hard work in the vineyards, especially mulching, paid off and we saw the rest of the season yielding some incredible fruit. It was definitely a winemaker’s vintage, fruit needed to be extensively sorted, ferments were slightly cooler and we kept time on skins limited. In all we are extremely happy with the wines we have put to bottle and hope you will enjoy the release over many years to come.

Description

THIEF IN THE NIGHT 2022.

Tasting Notes by Duncan Savage:

VINEYARD: Dry farmed bushvines grown on sandstone soils at 704m above sea level. Days are extreme, nights are cool and Grenache is very happy there. We have worked with this site since 2011, canopies are more open these days as we look for more filtered light but the vineyard continues to deliver.

VINIFICATION: Grapes are meticulously sorted in the winery as wholebunches, roughly 10% is excluded from year to year. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in a combination of conical foudre and open top fermenters with 20% of the fruit being retained as wholebunches. After 2 weeks on skins the fermented grapes are basketpressed followed by 10 months in foudre and older 500L barrels.

TASTING NOTES: Slightly less aromatic than Follow the Line, Thief in the Night displays the purity and power of Grenache. Cherries, bramble,  herbs and subtle spice with a savoury tension and firm chalky tannins. This 2022 is what we expect of the vineyard with a touch more texture and grip, a wine that will develop well over the next 10 years.

VARIETAL: Grenache (includes 14% Piekenierskloof Cinsault).

ANALYSIS: Alc.13.8%Vol | RS2.8g/l | pH3.75 | TA4.5g/l.

ORIGIN: Piekenierskloof.
